An HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) medical is a two-part examination required by the DVLA to ensure a driver’s fitness to safely operate large vehicles. It includes both a physical examination and a mental health assessment, focusing on identifying any medical conditions that could affect your ability to drive.
The first part of the medical involves an interview with a doctor about your medical history, including any current or past conditions, medications, mental health concerns and any history of substance misuse. This helps evaluate your overall mental and physical wellbeing.
The physical examination includes checks of your height, weight and blood pressure. You’ll also undergo:
-A vision test
-Neurological screening
-Diabetes testing
-Cardiovascular health check (for heart conditions)
-Drug testing (if required)
All findings are recorded on a D4 medical form, which is completed and signed by the medical practitioner. This form must be submitted to the DVLA along with your HGV licence application or renewal.
If you are under the age of 45, your HGV medical will remain valid until your 45th birthday. After that, you will need to pass the HGV medical assessment every five years until the age of 65. Once you reach 65, the medical must be renewed annually. In some cases, the DVLA may require more frequent medical assessments if you have certain health conditions. If this applies to you, the DVLA will notify you directly. Regular medicals are essential to ensure that drivers continue to meet the health standards required for safe driving.
HGV drivers can fail their medical assessment for a range of reasons, with some of the most common being poor eyesight or hearing loss. Many drivers assume their vision is fine, only to discover issues during the eye test. Failing due to eyesight doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to drive professionally again. Often, a visit to the optician and updated prescription glasses are all that’s needed to meet the standard.
However, more serious health concerns can also lead to a failed medical. These include cardiovascular conditions such as high blood pressure or heart disease, as well as neurological disorders like epilepsy. Certain mental health issues may also affect your ability to pass the assessment, depending on how they impact your ability to drive safely.
If any concerns are identified, you may be advised to seek treatment or further testing before reapplying.
