How the Flu Vaccine Works

The flu vaccine does not contain a live virus, so it cannot cause the flu. Instead, it stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies that will protect you if you encounter the virus later. Some people may experience mild side effects, such as a slight temperature or muscle aches. However, these typically pass within a day or two.

The vaccine takes about 10 days to become fully effective and should be renewed each year to maintain protection.

The flu vaccine helps protect you from contracting the flu, a serious illness that affects your lungs and breathing. It works by helping your body create antibodies, which are proteins that fight off the flu virus.

The vaccine contains a mix of three flu virus strains that are expected to be the most common that season. By getting the vaccine, you also reduce the chance of spreading the flu to others.

Yes, the flu vaccine is safe, as it does not contain live pathogens. While some individuals may experience mild side effects, such as soreness at the injection site or a slight fever, these symptoms typically resolve within one to two days. Severe side effects are extremely rare.

The vaccine is effective in reducing the risk of getting the flu and is especially beneficial for older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions. Additionally, it helps lower the risk of serious complications, such as heart attacks, particularly in those with pre-existing heart disease.

The flu vaccine is recommended to people who are at higher risk of getting seriously ill from seasonal flu. This includes individuals aged 65 and over, as well as those who are six months and older. People with long-term health issues, such as chronic conditions, should also get vaccinated.

Pregnant women are advised to receive the flu vaccine, as well as those living in care facilities. Additionally, individuals who care for or live with someone vulnerable should also consider getting vaccinated to protect themselves and those they care for.
