Private Blood Tests in Birmingham
The Oakley Medical Practice offers a comprehensive range of blood tests with pathology services from a range of laboratories throughout the UK. If you have questions or concerns about your health, make an appointment to see one of our doctors. If necessary, they may advise taking blood or urine samples to ease your concerns, confirm a diagnosis, eliminate potential problems or advise on lifestyle changes or treatment options.
Taking medication before your blood test depends on the type of test being conducted. Some blood tests might require you to fast or avoid certain medication to get accurate results.
Your GP will advise you on how to prepare for your blood test. If you are still unsure, consult your GP before your test to confirm what you can and can’t take.
During your blood test, a sample of your blood will be taken to test. The process is as below:
- You will be asked to sit down and a compression strap will be placed around your upper arm. This will make your veins more visible to the practitioner.
- Your arm will be cleaned with an antiseptic wipe before the needle is placed into your arm.
- A sterile needle will be inserted into your vein. Depending on what test you are having one or more vials will be taken.
- The needle will be removed and a small bandage or cotton ball will be applied to your arm to stop any bleeding.
Your blood test will normally take a few minutes. You may feel slight discomfort or a brief sting during your test but this will quickly go away.
The time it takes to get your blood test results can vary depending on the type of test being conducted. Some common tests can have results in a few hours or the same day. Whereas more complex texts may take several days or weeks to come back.
Your GP will be able to give you an estimated time frame based on the tests your blood is being sent off for. If you don’t hear back about your results after a few weeks, contact your GP.
You will receive your blood test results from the GP. They will review them with you, explain what they mean and discuss the next steps. Your results can be given to you in various ways, depending on your preference.
- In person: Your GP may discuss the results with you during a follow up appointment.
- By phone: You may receive a call from your GP or a member of their team to go over the results.
- Online: My GPs now offer a secure online portal where you can access your test results.
Depending on your results, your GP might want to discuss your results with you in more detail. Most surgeries will call you to book an appointment.
If you’re feeling nervous, don’t worry — blood tests are quick, lasting only a few minutes, and usually only cause a brief pinch or mild discomfort. Our experienced team is here to make sure you’re comfortable every step of the way.
I went into Oakley today for my first Hayfever injection I was very nervous, On arrival Sian (nurse) and the ladies at reception greater me with a smile. Sian took me straight in, she made me feel at ease right away, and answered all of my questions. I will definitely be recommending family and friends here.
