Do You Need Migraine Support?

Around ten million people in the UK live with migraines, with women being two to three times more affected than men. The Migraine Trust estimates that more than one million of them have chronic migraine, meaning they experience symptoms for at least fifteen days each month.

Migraines are not just a bad headache. The symptoms can last for days or even weeks, and they often include more than severe head pain. Many people also experience:

  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea or vomiting

Many of our patients come to us after trying oral medications without success or because they want an option that does not involve taking tablets every day.

You can book a private consultation with us to talk through your migraine symptoms and explore the best treatment plan for you.

Discuss Your Symptoms with a GP

Our Approach to Migraine Treatment:

  • Initial Assessment:

We will discuss the full history of your headaches, what triggers them, what treatments you have used and how they affect your daily life. We may also identify if another cause could be contributing to your pain and help you recognise the difference between migraines and other types of headaches.

  • Treatment Plan:

Once we understand your migraine pattern, we create a personalised treatment plan. This can include lifestyle and trigger management such as sleep, hydration, stress and diet, as well as preventive medications and acute relief options. Where appropriate, migraine injections may be recommended and are delivered by our experienced clinicians.

  • Follow-up and Review:

Migraine care is a continuous process. We will review your progress and adjust the plan where needed. Our aim is to work with you to reduce the number of migraines, their intensity and their overall impact on your life.

How Do Injections for Migraine Headaches Work?

At The Oakley Medical Practice, injectable migraine treatments are available for both acute and chronic migraine attacks. This involves a series of small injections placed into specific muscles linked to migraine pain. By calming these muscles, the treatment reduces overactivity in the pain pathways that trigger migraines.

Injections are given into precise areas such as:

  • Forehead
  • Temples
  • Back of the head
  • Neck
  • Shoulders

The procedure usually takes around ten minutes, using fine needles for comfort. Some patients notice improvement within one to two weeks, and results may last up to three to six months. Repeat sessions can help maintain consistent migraine relief.

Call us today to request an appointment, and our experienced doctors can assess whether migraine injections are right for you.

FAQs

Migraines are a severe type of headache that causes intense, throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. They are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people experience visual disturbances such as flashing lights or zigzag lines before a migraine begins, known as an aura. Migraines can be severe enough to interfere with daily activities.

Migraines are a complex neurological condition influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. They occur when certain nerves in the brain become overactive, releasing chemicals that cause inflammation and dilation of blood vessels. Migraines can be triggered by factors such as stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, hormonal changes and certain foods or environmental factors.

There are several types of migraines. The most common are migraine without aura and migraine with aura. Migraines without aura involve moderate to severe pain, occurring without any warning signs. Migraines with aura include additional neurological symptoms like flashing lights, tingling, or visual changes before the headache begins. Some people experience chronic migraine, where headaches occur 15 or more days per month. Vestibular migraine can include symptoms of vertigo, dizziness and balance issues.

Without treatment, a migraine can last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours. Some people feel warning signs, called the prodrome phase, up to two days before the headache starts, including fatigue, irritability, food cravings or neck stiffness. After the pain subsides, many experience a postdrome phase, where they feel drained or moody for up to 24 hours.

The most common type of headache is a tension-type headache. It usually feels like a low-pressure, squeezing sensation around the forehead and temples. These headaches are mild to moderate in intensity and don’t typically come with other symptoms. If the pain becomes severe, it’s no longer considered a tension headache.

Migraines, on the other hand, are more intense and can last anywhere between four hours and three days. Along with throbbing head pain, people often experience sensitivity to light and sound, as well as nausea. These additional symptoms are key signs that the headache is a migraine rather than a tension headache.

You should seek medical advice if your headaches are frequent, severe or interfere with your daily life. If you experience sudden, severe headaches unlike any you’ve had before or if they come with symptoms like vision loss, weakness, or confusion, you should see a doctor immediately. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, you can book a private GP consultation with our medical professionals at The Oakley Medical Practice to explore preventive treatment options.

Migraine injections are given in specific areas of the head and neck. These include the forehead, temples, back of the head, upper neck and shoulders. This will depend on the areas of pain and the symptoms you’re experiencing. The procedure is quick, typically taking 5 to 10 minutes, and is done using very fine needles.

Most people begin to feel relief about two weeks after receiving migraine injections, with the full effect lasting up to three months or longer. Regular treatment every three months to six months helps maintain consistent relief and prevents the return of symptoms.

Fab professional service as always. I highly recommend doing things properly, prioritising your health by coming here.
