Why Get Vaccinated Against Meningitis B?
Meningitis B is caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B bacteria, which live harmlessly in the throats of around one in ten people. The danger comes when those bacteria get into the bloodstream or the fluid around the brain and spinal cord. At that point the infection moves quickly, and can be fatal.
Vaccination is the only reliable protection for this strain of meningitis. Early symptoms of meningitis can include:
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Sensitivity to light
- Drowsiness or confusion
- Nausea and vomiting
- A dark purple rash that does not fade under pressure
Anyone who suspects meningitis should seek emergency care immediately rather than wait for a rash to develop.
Who Needs the Meningitis B Vaccine?
Eligibility for a free MenB vaccine on the NHS is limited to babies, a small number of at-risk groups and, in 2026 only, a one-off NHS vaccination programme for some young people aged 17 to 25.
Everyone outside those groups needs to arrange the vaccine privately.

- Babies born on or after 1 May 2015, are eligible for the MenB vaccine as part of the routine childhood schedule at 8 weeks, 16 weeks and 1 year.
- People with medical conditions that raise their risk, such as no working spleen or a complement disorder.
The 2026 NHS programme
- Year 13 pupils in England born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, regardless of what they plan to do after leaving college.
- People under 25 born on or after 21 July 2001 who are starting university or moving into residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026, including international students.
The 2026 NHS programme is a one-off and is time- limited. First doses run until 31 December 2026 and second doses until 31 March 2027. Postgraduates and students returning for a second year or later are not included.

Why are Young People at Higher Risk of Meningitis B?
Only since 2015 has there been a vaccine against Meningitis B. Students born before 2015 may have missed the MenB vaccine as part of their childhood schedule and therefore remain unprotected.
Teenagers and young adults carry meningococcal bacteria in their throats at higher rates than any other age group, and the way young people socialise spreads it efficiently. The bacteria spread through saliva and respiratory droplets, meaning students are at higher risk through:
- Kissing, coughing and sneezing
- Sharing drinks, cutlery, water bottles and vapes
- Living in shared halls of residence or student houses, where close contact is common
- Meeting large numbers of new people during Freshers’ Week, increasing exposure

It is also available privately at The Oakley Medical Practice, and eligible patients can still be vaccinated privately at our clinic if that is more convenient or if they want the course completed sooner. We are based at 52 Bishops Way in Sutton Coldfield and offer both doses without a waiting list.
The number of MenB doses you need depends on your age. Teenagers, adults and anyone aged 2 years or older need two doses given 6 months apart. Babies under 2 years receive three doses, at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 1 year.
Our nurse will confirm the right schedule for you at your appointment and book your second dose before you leave the clinic.
Adults are not offered the MenB vaccine routinely on the NHS unless they meet certain risk factors. Adults with no working spleen or a complement disorder are at particular risk, as are those moving into shared living or travelling to an area with a known outbreak. Any adult can arrange the two-dose course privately at our clinic without a referral.
No. The Meningitis B vaccine protects against meningococcal group B only, so it does not cover every strain of meningitis. Meningitis can also be caused by meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y, pneumococcal and Hib bacteria. Other routine immunisations, such as the MenACWY vaccine, are needed to guard against the other major bacterial strains.
