Is the MenACWY Vaccine Necessary?
Meningococcal disease is a travel-related illness that is vaccine-preventable, and the risk is higher for people travelling to regions where the infection is more common or during outbreaks.
- The African meningitis belt stretches from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east and carries the largest burden of meningococcal disease in the world. Epidemics peak in the dry season between December and June.
- Saudi Arabia requires every Hajj and Umrah pilgrim aged one and over to show proof of MenACWY vaccination before a visa is issued.
The MenACWY programme introduced in UK schools in 2015 has kept A, C, W and Y cases very low domestically through herd protection. That protection does not travel with you, which is why the vaccine is recommended for specific destinations and activities.
Who Needs the MenACWY Vaccine?
If you are due to travel for Hajj or Umrah to Saudi Arabia, make sure that you check the compulsory requirements for Meningitis ACWY vaccination and certificate. You should also consider getting vaccinated if you are travelling to a country where meningococcal meningitis is present and will be staying for an extended period of time or if you are involved in activities that may increase your risk of exposure to the disease, such as working in a healthcare setting.
The Meningitis ACWY vaccination is now advised for:
- Hajj and Umrah pilgrims aged one and over, including seasonal workers
- Long-stay travellers to the African meningitis belt who will have close contact with the local population
- People visiting friends and relatives in higher-risk countries
- Backpackers and anyone travelling rough or staying in shared accommodation
- Healthcare workers and aid workers based in affected regions
- People with no spleen, a non-functioning spleen or a complement disorder
- Anyone under 25 in the UK who missed the MenACWY dose given in school Years 9 and 10

There are no waiting lists for a private MenACWY vaccination at our Birmingham clinic, and flexible appointments are available. You can book online or submit an appointment enquiry. If you are travelling for Hajj or Umrah, book three to four weeks before you fly, so there is room to reschedule and still clear the 10-day rule.

Side effects of the MenACWY vaccine can include some redness, swelling or tenderness where the injection was given, and this settles within a day or two. Headache, tiredness and a mild fever can also happen in the first 24 hours, and again are short-lived. Serious reactions are rare. Our nurse will talk you through what to expect and what to do if anything concerns you afterwards.
Yes, we issue a signed vaccination certificate at your appointment. It records the vaccine given, the date and your personal details, which is what authorities check at the visa stage and can check again on arrival. Make sure the name on your certificate matches your passport exactly and keep it with your travel documents. We are also a NaTHNaC-approved yellow fever vaccination centre, so we can issue a yellow fever certificate at the same visit where your destination requires one.
