About Dr Long
What Inspired You to Become a Doctor?
Since a young age I have always been fascinated by biology and the human body. When I was around 10 years old, I bought an old second-hand medical handbook from a charity shop, probably dating back to the 1920s or 1930s. It explained human anatomy, the nervous system and how the body functions, which I found really fascinating. I still remember the dusky old book smell it had.
Studying medicine felt like a natural path as it allowed me to continue exploring my interest in biology while applying that knowledge in a practical way to help improve patients’ health.
You Have an Interest in Minor Skin Surgery. Can You Explain What Types of Conditions This Can Help With?
I have a particular interest in treating skin growths, lumps and bumps. I regularly perform minor skin surgical procedures to remove common benign lesions, including, skin tags, warts, skin cysts and moles.
I also remove basal cell carcinomas (BCC’s), a common form of skin cancer, through my work with another organisation.
In addition, I frequently perform steroid joint injections to treat pain and inflammation in areas such as the knee, shoulder, hip (greater trochanter), carpal tunnel and tennis elbow.
How Important is Preventative Healthcare in General Practice?
More important than anything else. If you can prevent something, then there is no need to treat is there?
Are There Any Routine Checks or Screenings You Think People Should Prioritise?
I feel most people should get their cholesterol, sugar levels (for diabetes), thyroid, full blood count (checking for anaemia and immune systems), kidneys and liver checked as a minimum basic test, as often there are no obvious symptoms when these things go wrong.
What Should Patients Expect From a Consultation With You?
I am very easy going and approachable. I am a very relaxed person (I regularly do meditation!) so patients will definitely feel at ease to talk about any issue or problem.
I listen to the actual problems patients present with and try to methodically break down the plan and treatment into easily understood language.
What Do You Enjoy Doing Outside of Work?
Outside of medicine I have a wide variety of interests. I am currently a keen amateur pianist and have reached Grade 8. I also enjoy playing table tennis at a pretty advanced level.
Fitness and exercise are also very important to me, including strength training, calisthenics and cardio, and I enjoy spending time with my wife and children.
If You Could Give Patients One Piece of Advice About Looking After Their Health, What Would it Be?
This is very difficult to answer, as one piece of advice would mean that takes precedence over other things. I am going to cheat and say ‘ DESSSA,’ which is an acronym I just made up!
It stands for Diet, Exercise, Sleep, no Smoking, no Stress and no Alcohol. I truly believe that if the above is followed, the VAST majority of health issues will be abolished!
