The HbA1c test plays a central role in both detecting type 2 diabetes and managing it over time. It gives an average of your blood sugar levels over the past three months, offering a much clearer picture than a one-off finger prick test.

Medication, diet, physical activity and other lifestyle factors all play a part in improving blood sugar control. Our private GPs can also offer a range of health checks and dietary and lifestyle advice to help prevent or manage diabetes.

Contact us today to arrange your private HbA1c or diabetes blood test at our CQC-registered private GP practice in Sutton Coldfield, in Birmingham.

In the UK, HbA1c results are measured in millimoles per mole (mmol/mol).

  • Below 42 mmol/mol – This is considered the normal, non-diabetic range. It means your average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months are within healthy limits.
  • 42–47 mmol/mol – This range is often described as pre-diabetes or impaired glucose regulation. It indicates a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • 48 mmol/mol or above – This level is consistent with diabetes and requires medical assessment and ongoing monitoring.

If you are unsure what your result means, book a consultation with one of our GPs, who can help interpret your level in the context of your overall health and risk factors.

Although HbA1c is widely used, it is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used to diagnose diabetes in:

  • Children and young people
  • Pregnant women or those who have recently been pregnant
  • People suspected of having type 1 diabetes
  • People who have had symptoms for less than two months
  • Those taking medications such as steroids or antipsychotics that can raise blood sugar quickly
  • People with certain blood conditions, including anaemia or haemoglobin disorders such as sickle cell disease
  • Anyone who has recently had a blood transfusion

No, fasting is not required for an HbA1c test.

You do not need to fast beforehand and no special preparation is required. The test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months, so eating or drinking on the day will not affect the result.

I went into Oakley today for my first Hayfever injection I was very nervous, On arrival Sian (nurse) and the ladies at reception greater me with a smile. Sian took me straight in, she made me feel at ease right away, and answered all of my questions. I will definitely be recommending family and friends here.
