Full Blood Count (FBC) Test in Birmingham

The Oakley Medical Practice offers private Full Blood Count tests in Birmingham, carried out at our Sutton Coldfield private GP practice. An FBC measures the different types of components in your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, providing a comprehensive overview of your blood health and overall well-being.

By assessing the number, size and characteristics of these blood cells, an FBC test can help identify signs of conditions such as anaemia, infection, inflammation and certain blood disorders. Your blood sample is taken by our experienced nurse before being sent to our trusted laboratory partner for analysis.

What is a Full Blood Count Test?

A Full Blood Count (FBC) test includes several individual measurements that assess your overall health. It is commonly used as part of a routine health check or to investigate symptoms such as fatigue and frequent infections and to monitor ongoing conditions.

Our private Full Blood Count blood test includes a detailed analysis of:

  • Haemoglobin (Hb)
  • Red Blood Cell Count (RBC)
  • Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV)
  • White Blood Cell Count (WBC)
  • Platelet Count
  • 5-Part White Blood Cell Differential

Together these results build a detailed snapshot of your blood health and immune system.

FAQs

No, fasting is not required before a FBC blood test. Food and drink do not affect the blood cells measured during an FBC, so you can eat and drink as normal before your appointment.

However, if you’re having additional blood tests at the same appointment, such as a glucose or cholesterol test, you may need to fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand. If fasting is required, we’ll let you know when you book your appointment.

A Full Blood Count test measures the types and numbers of cells in your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. While it cannot diagnose every condition on its own, it is an important first-line blood test that can help detect or monitor a range of health conditions and indicate whether further investigation is needed.

An FBC blood test can help identify signs of:

  • Anaemia by measuring your red blood cells and haemoglobin levels.
  • Infections and inflammation, as changes in your white blood cell count can indicate your body is responding to an infection or inflammatory condition.
  • Bleeding and blood clotting disorders, as abnormal platelet levels may affect your blood’s ability to clot properly.
  • Bone marrow disorders
  • Inherited blood disorders such as thalassaemia and some other inherited conditions that affect red blood cells.
  • Autoimmune conditions such as lupus

An FBC test is often used alongside your symptoms, medical history and, where appropriate, additional blood tests to help your GP reach a diagnosis or monitor your health over time.

I went into Oakley today for my first Hayfever injection I was very nervous, On arrival Sian (nurse) and the ladies at reception greater me with a smile. Sian took me straight in, she made me feel at ease right away, and answered all of my questions. I will definitely be recommending family and friends here.
