Stockholm3 Blood Test - Test for Prostate Cancer

The NHS currently does not offer routine prostate cancer screening for most men in the UK. In 2026 the UK National Screening Committee recommended screening only for a small group of men who have a specific BRCA2 gene change and a family history of certain cancers. This means most men who want to check their risk will need to arrange testing privately.

The Stockholm3 test is a prostate cancer blood test that combines several sources of information to predict your risk of having aggressive prostate cancer. It measures PSA alongside other blood-based biomarkers, genetic markers and clinical risk factors such as your age and family history.

How Accurate is the Stockholm3 Test?

The Stockholm3 test is a powerful screening tool that is used for early detection of the most common cancer in men.

The Stockholm3 test has been studied in large clinical trials involving tens of thousands of men. Research has shown that it detects more clinically significant prostate cancers than PSA testing alone. At the same time, it reduces the number of unnecessary biopsies by around half.

Studies of the Stockholm3 test have shown it can:

  • Detect aggressive cancers that PSA testing alone may miss
  • Identify significant cancers even in men with low PSA levels
  • Tell the difference between aggressive and slow-growing cancers
  • Reduce unnecessary biopsies by around 50 percent
  • Perform well across men of different ethnic backgrounds

Taking medication before your blood test depends on the type of test being conducted. Some blood tests might require you to fast or avoid certain medication to get accurate results. 

Your GP will advise you on how to prepare for your blood test. If you are still unsure, consult your GP before your test to confirm what you can and can’t take.

During your blood test, a sample of your blood will be taken to test. The process is as below: 

  • You will be asked to sit down and a compression strap will be placed around your upper arm. This will make your veins more visible to the practitioner. 
  • Your arm will be cleaned with an antiseptic wipe before the needle is placed into your arm. 
  • A sterile needle will be inserted into your vein. Depending on what test you are having one or more vials will be taken. 
  • The needle will be removed and a small bandage or cotton ball will be applied to your arm to stop any bleeding.

Your blood test will normally take a few minutes. You may feel slight discomfort or a brief sting during your test but this will quickly go away. 

The time it takes to get your blood test results can vary depending on the type of test being conducted. Some common tests can have results in a few hours or the same day. Whereas more complex texts may take several days or weeks to come back. 

Your GP will be able to give you an estimated time frame based on the tests your blood is being sent off for. If you don’t hear back about your results after a few weeks, contact your GP.

When you have a blood test, you will receive your results by email. If you would like to discuss your results with our GP, you’ll need to book a follow-up appointment. For certain types of tests, such as BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy) or Well Person Health Reviews, the follow-up consultation to discuss blood test results is included in the price.
